San Cayetano and San Lorenzo Fiestas in Madrid

22nd July 2009, Comments 0 comments

Some of the liveliest districts of Madrid, La Latina and Lavapies, celebrate their patron saints in this annual festival from 7-10 August 2009.

La Latina and Lavapies’ patron saints San Cayatano and San Lorenzo are celebrated every year by dressing up in 19th-century costumes (chulapos) and taking to the streets in religious processions in the evening.

No celebration is complete without dancing the “chotis” and singing which take place in the finely-decorated streets, while people drink traditional lemonade and eat aubergine fritters.

Look out also for typical foods like sangria, hot chocolate, churros and competitions for the most well-dressed boy and girl chulapos.
