VATICAN CITY - Pope John Paul II is to grant an audience to Crown Prince Felipe of Spain and his wife, the former journalist Letizia Ortiz, it was announced Wednesday.

The newlyweds will have a private meeting with the pontiff in his private library Monday, a month after their state wedding in Madrid.

The 31-year-old former television presenter, whose official title is now the Princess of the Asturias, is the first commoner and divorcee to marry into the Spanish royal family.

For the Catholic church, her civil marriage and divorce do not count, as only vows taken before a priest are regarded as a true marriage.

The meeting should be more cordial than the meeting this week between the pontiff and Spanish prime minister Jose Luis Rodriguez when the Pope criticised the Socialist government's policies on education and religion, gay weddings and proposed changes in abortion laws.
