GIBRALATAR — A fresh row has blown up after a British nuclear submarine docked at Gibraltar with ecologists and Spanish residents fearing it was there to repair a damaged reactor.

The HMS Turbulent arrived at the British colony prompting ecologists to demand that the Gibraltar authorities reveal if was there for repairs.

An earlier row started when another British nuclear submarine, HMS Tireless, did stop at The Rock for repairs on a damaged reactor.

It led to fears from Spanish residents and ecology groups that the Costa del Sol could be contaminated if there were a nuclear leak.

But Juan Jose Lopez Garzon, the Spanish government spokesman for Andalusia, said the Turbulent was simply stopping off to refuel and give the crew time off.

He added that the British government had given the Spanish authorities guarantees that the submarine would take all the security measures necessary.
