Rioja exports soar by 16 percent

11 August 2006, MADRID – Exports of the Spanish wine Rioja climbed by 15.62 percent in the first half of this year, according to figures released on Friday.

MADRID – Exports of the Spanish wine Rioja climbed by 15.62 percent in the first half of this year, according to figures released on Friday.

The Group of Wine Producers and Exporters of Rioja said 38.17 million litres of the wine were sold abroad, compared to 33 million sold during the same period last year.

Sales totalled EUR 163.13 million, compared to EUR 134.5 million and the price per litre of the wine was increased from EUR 4.07 to EUR 4.27.

The British are the biggest buyers of Rioja. They snapped up 13 million litres compared to 10.8 last year, a rise of 19.21 percent.

Germans are also Rioja fans (6.3 million litres), as are the Americans (3.47 million), the Swiss (3.4), the Swedes (1.9), the Dutch (1.3) and the Danes (864,958).
