MADRID-Spain's traditional January sales started with many consumers set to enjoy much bigger discounts than before.

Retailers have slashed prices in a bid to attract shoppers back into their stores.

The move was in response to sluggish sales last year and also to try to compensate for a disappointing Christmas period.

The January sales in Spain traditionally start later than other European countries because Christmas officially ends after Epiphany or Los Reyes de Magos (The Three Kings) on 6 January.
