MADRID - U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will visit Madrid on 1 June, it was reported on Wednesday.

The Spanish daily El Pais reported US secretary of state Rice will meet with Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and his foreign minister Miguel Angel Moratinos.

The meeting had been expected in March after Rice indicated at a conference in Paris in January she would like to visit Spain.

Rice's visit will represent a significant thawing in US-Spanish relations after their differences on Iraq.

The two nations have had a frosty relationship since Spain withdrew its troops from Iraq following the socialist election victory in 2004.
