MADRID - The firebrand radio talk-show host Federico Jiménez Losantos, who is the leading presenter on the Church-backed Cope radio station, was back in court yesterday, just a month after having been fined EUR 36,000 for using his programme to insult and slander the mayor of Madrid, Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón.

This time he is charged with insulting the former editor of the newspaper Abc, José Antonio Zarzalejos, who is demanding compensation of EUR 600,000.

During the hearing, which took place in Madrid, Zarzalejos' lawyer provided a list of insults Losantos had employed, including: "ignoramus," "uncouth," "hitman,"  "melon," "vulgar," "fatuous," "traitor," "cheat," and "detritus".

Losantos told the court that the context of his words was all important, adding: "Without criticism and humour, freedom of expression is impossible."
