SANTIAGO - Spain's Queen Sofia has arrived in the Chilean capital of Santiago to attend a regional conference on ways of extending credit to small businesses.

The stay there is the first leg of the queen's trip to Latin America.

Queen Sofia will be in Santiago until Thursday and is expected to attend the conference to  get a firsthand look at a development project being financed by the Spanish government in this South American nation.

After visiting Chile the queen will travel to Mexico and Colombia, where she is scheduled to take part in other meetings geared towards finding ways to help millions of families in the region escape from  poverty.
