Madrid - Princess Elena, the oldest child of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía, is to separate from her husband, a spokesman for Spain's royal household announced Tuesday, although he refused to say whether it is the first step toward divorce.

Elena, 43, married Jaime de Marichalar, a Spanish banker and nobleman, in 1995. The couple, who hold the title of duke and duchess of Lugo, have two children, Felipe and Victoria. Rumors of marital problems had been circulating for months, all initially denied by the palace.

If the couple divorce, it would be the first permanent split within the Spanish royal family. Although Elena is the king's oldest child, her brother Felipe is first in line for the throne because the Constitution favors the male hereditary line.
