BARCELONA — Princess Cristina, the youngest daughter of Spain's king and queen, gave birth to her fourth child, a daughter, in a Barcelona hospital, the Royal Palace said.

The first daughter born to Cristina and her husband, Iñaki Urdagarin, will be named Irene.

"If God gave us a daughter some day, we always thought about calling her Irene," Urdagarin told reporters.

"We always liked it (the name) because of its meaning and beauty."

The girl, the sixth grandchild of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, will be ninth in line to the Spanish throne.

Irene, who was born at 3:55pm in a natural child birth, weighed 3,685 grammes (8.1 pounds) and measured 50 centimetres (19.68 inches), Dr. Manuel Garcia Valdecasas, one of the attending physicians, said.

King Juan Carlos got the news in Paris, where he watched Spain's Rafael Nadal defeat Argentina's Mariano Puerta in the men's final at the French Open.

The king, who received a call on his cell phone advising him of the birth of his new grandchild, gave a thumbs up and was quickly congratulated by the celebrities sitting around him.

The other three children of the Duke and Duchess of Palma, Juan Valentin, 5, Pablo Nicolas, 4, and Miguel, 3, were also born in Barcelona.
