ATHENS- A Greek Orthodox priest is to be extradited to Spain to face a charge of sexual abuse of a girl in Barcelona, legal sources said.
Father Stafilakis, 57, is alleged by Spanish police to have committed the offence when he was a teacher of Greek at a high school in the north-eastern Spanish city during 2001-2002.
A Greek court ordered the priest's provisional detention, then ruled he should be extradited. An appeals court upheld the decision.
If convicted in Spain, the defendant could serve a custodial sentence in his home country, the sources said.
They said this was the first occasion on which a new European Union arrest warrant procedure introduced last year had been applied in Greece.
The EU arrest warrant aims to replace cumbersome extradition procedures by allowing legal authorities in the member-states to deal with one another directly.
