MADRID — The tanker which sank leaking thousands of tonnes of oil four years ago is still discharging fuel say scientists.
The Prestige, which sank of the coast of Galicia in November 2002 causing Spain's biggest environmental disaster, is leaking more oil from the wreck.
The government sponsored inquiry admitted petrol samples were found in the area used for fishing near where the Prestige sank.
But the researchers said the leaks will not harm marine life.
The Spanish daily El Pais reported on Wednesday the government admission comes after a scientific committee under the previous administration claimed there would be no more leaks from the wreck until 2025.
But a team of scientists said the oil had escaped this year.
The disaster caused serious damage to the fishing and wildlife on the north and north west coast of Spain.
