ROME — Pope Benedict XVI donned the Spanish Guardia Civil tricorn hat when he appeared in St Peter's Square.

The three-cornered hat was passed to the Pontiff by someone in the crowd.

But it may be seen as potentially controversial move as the Guardia Civil have long been associated with the former dictator General Francisco Franco.

The militarised police force are still linked to the army, 30 years after Franco's death.

And their three-cornered hat symbolised the force which was  used by the dictator for political reasons to maintain order in post-Civil War Spain.
