BARCELONA - Spanish authorities have broken up a drugs gang which smuggled South American cocaine into Europe, seizing more than a tonne of the drug hidden in frozen shellfish container.

The operation was dubbed "Red Shrimp" by police because the drugs were concealed in a container with frozen shellfish from Venezuela that had arrived in the port of Barcelona.

Police arrested seven people - four Spaniards and three Colombians.

One gun and five vehicles were also seized in coordinated raids in Barcelona, Alicante and Madrid.

Officials said the drugs were bound for the Spanish market and  other European countries.

No street value was put on the cocaine by police.
