BARCELONA-Spanish police recovered on Thursdsay eight important works of art, including lithographs by Joan Miro and Catalan artist Antoni Tapies, in an operation against a gang of art fraudsters.

Three members of the gang have been arrested while they were allegedly carrying out a complicated fraud involving art works worth EUR 900,000.

The fraud involved exchanging the real paintings and lithographs for a false painting by Edward Manet.

Among those allegedly involved in the fraud were owners of art galleries in Madrid and Barcelona, and a London auction house

The Spanish Guardia Civil became involved in the operation after discovering the fake Manet painting.

They were called in after an 85-year-old art collector raised the alarm when he became suspicious of the works which he was being offered by the alleged fraudsters.

The gang made fake certificates of authenticity to try to trick the collector into parting with his money.
