VALENCIA – Spanish police have rounded up six people who operated a drug ring which used a transport company to distribute the dope around Europe, officials said on Monday.

In the operation carried out with Italian police in Milan and Naples, authorities seized almost 3,000 kilograms of hashish, 52 kilograms of cocaine, EUR 61,000 in cash and four vehicles.

According to a National Police spokesperson, the gang operated out of the town of Alzira in Valencia province, where the transport company was based.

The leader of the ring, who also owned the company, would arrange with foreign organised crime groups to make drug deliveries to Italy and other European countries.

The dope would be hidden secret compartments in the lorries and driven to the requested destinations.

Police said they began investigating the existence of a possible Spain-based drug ring  last November and the arrest last month of a lorry driver found with 1,850 kilograms of hashish in his vehicle in Cordoba eventually led them to the gang.
