MADRID – Police arrested three people allegedly linked to an ETA cell in the Basque Country.
They were named as Sergio García Lazkano, who was arrested in Rentaría, Unai Lamariano, detained in San Sebastián.
The third suspect was Joseba González Pavón, who was arrested in Pamplona. All the arrests took place over the past weekend.
This brings the number of ETA suspects arrested in the last few days to 11 – the biggest police operation against the Basque separatist organisation since 2004.
The other suspectsa arrested were named as José Ángel Lerín Sánchez, Juan Carlos Herrador Pousa, Endika Zinkunegi Zubizarreta, Iñigo Orúe, Julián Larrañaga – who was later released -Agote, Itziar Agirre and Lorea Irigoyen.
In the raids, police have discovered more than 100 kilogrammes of explosives.
Police also found documents relating to the Popular Party and the ruling socialists.
Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, interior minister, said the suspects were “behind 24 bomb attacks between 2004-2006”.
Sources close to the investigation told EFE news agency, some of the suspects were linked to planning bombs.
