MADRID - Spanish police have seized 400,000 euros (540,000 dollars) in forged 200 euro bills, one of the largest amounts of fake money ever confiscated in Europe, media reports Wednesday quoted police as saying.

Police detained four Bulgarians on charges of smuggling the bills to Spain, and six Romanians suspected of putting them into circulation.

The detainees lived in Coslada and Torrejon de Ardoz near Madrid. The money was believed to have been forged in Bulgaria, where police were investigating the case.

The bills were so well made that their fakeness was not revealed by ultra-violet controls. "It could only be detected with a special mechanical procedure that not all banks have," a police source said. dpa st sc
