MADRID — Spanish police have seized 500 kilogram's of cocaine worth hundreds of thousands of euros hidden on a yacht sailing off the coast of Asturias in northern Spain.

One suspect, who is French, has been arrested.

Police involved in an operation against gangs smuggling large quantities of cocaine into Europe, through Spain, stopped the boat.

The operation, codenamed 'Capitan Garfio', is ongoing and police said there could be more arrests later.

The suspect was named only as Jacques Joseph S, and has been taken to the port of Gijón.

Police sources said the 'modus operandi' of many gangs was to take the cocaine on sailing ships leaving ports in various South American countries and transfer it in the mid Atlantic to other boats, from where it could be brought to Europe.

On Sunday, authorities became aware of a ship, called 'Nyaminyami' which was sailing under the British flag.

But checks revealed it was not registered in Britain.

Early on Monday authorities boarded the ship and seized the cocaine.
