PALMA DE MALLORCA — Spanish police seized 2.4 tonnes of cocaine when they raided a ship flying the UK flag near Ibiza.
The seizure was the largest shipment of cocaine ever intercepted in the Balearic Islands, said officials on Monday.
The police operation began in the early morning hours on Saturday with a raid on the catamaran Tatibat, which authorities had been keeping under surveillance because they suspected it was transporting drugs to mainland Spain.
The police officers who boarded the craft met with no resistance from the three crewmembers who, according to initial reports, were citizens of at least two Eastern European countries.
In the raid, police found about 80 packs or bundles of cocaine weighing between 25 and 35 kilograms (55 to 77 pounds) each.
The Civil Guard - Spain's rural and border police - took the catamaran to the port of Sant Antoni, in Ibiza, from where the three arrested men were transferred to other law enforcement facilities so their identities could be determined and their statements taken.
