MADRID-Spanish police have seized EUR 2.5 million counterfeit and arrested 27 people, in the largest haul of fake currency since the introduction of the euro, police sources said.

Several weapons were also seized during the operation, which was jointly carried out across the country by national police and officers from the autonomous Catalonia region in north-eastern Spain.

Sources close to the investigation quoted by private radio Cadena Ser said most of the arrests were around Madrid, where they also seized two printers.

The counterfeit euros, the equivalent of USD 3.3m, were of very high quality, police sources added.
