BARCELONA –A suspected gunman who shot dead a police officer as he escaped from a court cell was arrested Thursday.
The suspect, named as Julio Navarro. was detained after a large-scale police operation in the San Cosme area, east of Barcelona.
Police are still hunting for the other suspected killer, named only as Antonio J, who is still on the run.
They believe the gunman, who is a gypsy, is being sheltered by other gipsies who live in one of the most notorious areas of the city.
The pair have been on the run since the drama started Monday when they grabbed a gun off the police officer and shot him as they were being taken from the police cell to appear in court.
The 25-year-old officer died instantly.
The pair burst out of the court building, hijacked a car and shot a painter who was working nearby. He was not seriously injured.
The shooting happened at the court at El Prat de Llobregat, near Barcelona airport to the west of the city.
A huge search has been underway to catch the escaped prisoners.
But police believed they were being sheltered by fellow gipsies who still keep to the 'code of silence'.
