MADRID - A Spanish judge has ordered the release of a Basque couple whose arrest had been touted as the capture of two of the "most wanted" members of the militant Basque separatist group ETA on Sunday, press reports said Wednesday.

The photos of Oroitz Aldekoa-Otarola and Agurne Salterain had been distributed by police, but it turned out there was not even an arrest warrant against them.

The couple had lodged an ETA member whom they described as a childhood friend. They told the judge they did not know that the man belonged to ETA, which has killed more than 800 people since 1968.
