MADRID — Police have freed a boy who was kidnapped as a baby four years ago in order to force the mother to prostitute herself to pay off a ransom.
The three-year-old child was freed in Mostoles, near Madrid.
Police arrested a couple who are allegedly linked to the kidnapping.
The child's mother was forced to pay off the 'debt' of EUR 45,000.
She has stopped working as a prostitute for some time and lives in Granada.
The mother, an illegal immigrant from Nigeria, claimed the couple stole her baby who was born in 2002.
She claimed she was forced to work as a prostitute in various clubs in Madrid and elsewhere in Spain.
Police mounted a operation to watch the home of the two suspects, both women.
Neighbours said they had heard a child's cries and believed they not from the couple's other two children.
Police raided the apartment where they found the child and voodoo effigies.
He seemed in good health but was not as developed as she should have been because he could only just talk.
The child had been a virtual prisoner in the flat and neighbours never saw him being taken for a walk in a nearby park.
