MADRID -(AFP) - Spanish police on Wednesday found the body of a British woman who went missing earlier this week after her seven-year-old daughter fell from a hotel balcony on the Mediterranean island of Majorca.

The body of Sara Cooper, 45, was found in the sea near the beach at Cala Domingos in the east of the island, local police told the Europa Press agency.

Cooper, from the eastern English county of Cambridgeshire, had not been seen since her daughter Gianna fell from a fifth-floor hotel balcony in nearby Calas de Mallorca.

Police believe the woman became distraught after her daughter fell and threw herself into the water and drowned, the agency said.

They had been combing beaches and mountains on Majorca for signs of Cooper since she vanished.

Gianna suffered serious head injuries, a broken jaw and internal injuries in the fall and is in stable condition at a hospital in the port city of Palma.

Majorca is part of the Balearic Island archipelago, which is one of Europe's top holiday destinations.
