Madrid - Police detained 15 suspects in Palma de Majorca on Tuesday for illegal speed racing in the city's streets. The suspects, who were reported to have made bets of up to 1,000 Euro per race, had been carrying out such illegal competitions for almost a year.
The police investigation was helped by the suspects themselves, who filmed the races with cellphones and video cameras, before posting the events on YouTube, the popular video-sharing website.
Police are also investigating a workshop that allegedly modified the cars so they could race at higher speeds.
Prosecutor Elena Prieto said at a press conference that the suspects could be charged with reckless and "suicidal" driving, facing prison sentences of two to five years if found guilty. She said that while such races were "isolated events," they posed a great danger.
