MADRID -AFP - Spanish police had to wade in and disperse some of their own number  after a protest by several hundred officers over low wages, Spanish media reported.

Some 500 out-of-uniform officers brought traffic to a halt on the Castellana thoroughfare and forced anti-riot police to step in and clear the area.

The protesters were calling on the government to give them a pay rise, saying the national police earn only around 1,400 euros (2,000 dollars) a month in Madrid whereas counterparts in the regional police in the northern Basque region get 1,700 and 2,500 in the wealthy eastern region of Catalonia.
