MADRID — Spanish police arrested 22 people, including six minors, for sharing child-porn files by e-mail in Spain and Latin America.

In the operation, which involved 25 raids in 12 Spanish provinces, police identified and dismantled more than 30 Internet communities and groups - some in Latin American countries - whose main purpose was to share pictures and videos of abuse of adolescents, toddlers and even babies.

The investigations began in April 2005 following several anonymous complaints about the existence of a forum on a well-known Internet portal, which a large number of Web browsers used to establish contact with others users before exchanging the child-porn files.

Occasionally, the members of the Internet forum even offered payment to children for sex.

After several months of investigations, authorities identified a large group of Internet users who distributed, published and exchanged child pornography.

According to Spain's Civil Guard, a national police force, the use of e-mail for mass distribution of child pornography is a new development.

It also makes the crime more difficult to investigate, since the images are not found on Web pages or shared via forums or file-sharing programs, where the perpetrators can be easily identified.

After identifying the members of the network - made up of people from a wide variety of professions - the Civil Guard proceeded to apprehend the suspects, carrying out searches at residences in Barcelona, Cadiz, Madrid, Guadalajara, La Coruña, Almeria, Aviles, Melilla, Santander, Oviedo, Zaragoza and Valencia.

Spain has also requested the cooperation of Latin American authorities in countries where the other child porn Web groups operated.
