MADRID — Spanish police arrested more than 186 people all across the country for distributing child pornography, sources involved with the investigation told EFE.

The suspects are suspected of distributing pornographic pictures featuring children and the sources called some of the images "horrible" and "sinister".

The officials insisted that they could not give any more information about the police operation.

The operation, which is centred on the Basque Country, has led to the arrest of 12 suspects in that region alone.

Police sources said this was a "major operation" and more arrests could follow.

Spain has initiated several crackdowns on producers and distributors of child pornography during the past year or so.

In May, police dismantled a gang who raped babies and filmed the abuse.

Five people were arrested accused of abusing the children and distributing images of the abuse on the internet.

Spain's interior ministry said in a statement that the gang sold images "of dozens of children, many of them just months-old babies, filmed while they were being abused".

"Police have dismantled a ring of baby rapists," said the ministry, adding that the arrests took place in Murcia in south-east Spain, Barcelona, in the northeast and the northwest town of Orense.

In March, Spanish authorities announced results of a joint effort with police in 11 other countries to mount a coordinated assault on international purveyors of child pornography.

In raids on both sides of the Atlantic, police found tens of thousands of pictures, videos and CDs.
