MADRID – Spanish police on Tuesday seized a light plane loaded with over a ton of hashish which made an emergency landing at a farm and detained its two Mexican pilots, reports said.

The plane was being chased by a customs police helicopter when it landed in a field near the central town of Valdepenas, public radio RNE reported, citing local police.

It had been followed by the helicopter from the southern Mediterranean port of Almeria after customs officials discovered that it was transporting hashish from Morocco, the radio station said.

Neither police nor customs officials were immediately available to confirm the reports.

Spain's proximity to North Africa, a key source of hashish, and its close ties with its former colonies in Latin America, a major cocaine producing region, have made it an important gateway for international drug dealers.
