VALENCIA — A team of surgeons at a hospital in Valencia carried out a pioneering first double hand transplant, it was announced on Monday.

The patient, a 47-year-old woman who lost her hands in an explosion when she was 28, was said to be recovering well in hospital.

She is the first woman in Spain to receive such an operation.

The ten-hour operation happened on 30 November but details were only released now.

She had had to have both her hands amputated after a chemical explosion, said the leading surgeon Pedro Cavadas.

The patient, who may be released from hospital this week, should recover full use of her hands within six months.
