SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE - An experienced pilot and his wife died after their plane crashed into the sea off the Canary Island of Tenerife.
Agustin Enrique Gomez, 50, who was a fireman at an airport, died in the crash.
But his wife, identified only as Rosa Maria A., was given the kiss-of-life after being taken to the shore by rescuers.
Once she had been stabilized, she was transferred to hospital on the holiday island of Tenerife.
But she died hours later in hospital.
The crash happened earlier on Tuesday morning.
Her husband, Enrique Gomez, had been a flight instructor with many years experience.
He had worked for six months in an air training school in the Canary Islands, flying Cessna planes, like the one involved in the tragedy.
Rescuers said that the crash was due to a mechanical fault.
As the plane was descending towards the sea, the pilot attempted a 'splashdown' on the surface of the water, but the aircraft sank.
The aircraft had taken-off only half-an-hour before the crash.
It had been heading towards El Aaiun and crashed in the sea in front of Anaza, the capital of the island of Tenerife.
