MADRID - A close aide to disgraced former Peruvian spy chief Vladimiro Montesinos has been arrested in Barcelona, Spanish authorities said Thursday.
Orlando Raul Almeyda Pachas, 39, was detained by police officers acting on an international arrest warrant issued by a Peruvian court. He was taken into custody in the Poble Sec area of the city where he had apparently gone into hiding, mingling with the district's large Latin American population.
Almeyda served as a close advisor to Montesinos during the administrations of former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori. He stands accused of assisting in the illicit arms deals and bribery operations that led Montesinos to flee the country and brought down Fujimori's government in 2000.
Almeyda's former boss is currently in prison in Peru awaiting trial on 62 charges ranging from drug trafficking to murder.
