Two right-wing papers, ABC and El Mundo, published the photo of Obama and his wife Michelle with Zapatero, his wife Sonsoles and their two daughters, Alba and Laura, aged 13 and 16, whose faces were blurred.
The picture, taken at a reception at New York's Metropolitan Museum given by Obama for world leaders attending the UN General Assembly, was first released on the US State Department's web site, which then withdrew it following a request by Zapatero's office, El Mundo said.
Zapatero's office "called the White House to explain to them that the prime minister and his wife never like photographs of their daughters to be released to the media, and (the White House) understood completely and withdrew it," a government source told AFP.
Just months after Zapatero took in office 2004, Spanish magazine Diez Minutos published photos of his daughters, then aged eight and 10.
The prime minister then asked the media not to release pictures of Alba and Laura to protect their privacy.
