MADRID — About a thousand exotic animals, mostly snakes, lizards and turtles, died on Friday in a fire at an industrial park south of Madrid, authorities said.

Emergency workers told EFE the fire broke out early on Friday in Humanes at the premises of a business that specializes in sales of such animals.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control in about a half hour, but most of the creatures inside perished of smoke inhalation or the flames.

Firefighters found some of the animals who had survived and were removing them from the charred building, according to the reports.
