MADRID - (AFP) - Over 50 would-be illegal immigrants died off Cape Verde while attempting to reach Spain's Canary Islands by boat, maritime rescue services said Thursday.

A Spanish fishing boat discovered the seven bodies on a drifting vessel on which there was only one survivor, a spokesman for the rescue services said.

But it is thought over 50 died in all.
