MADRID - Spanish first division club Osasuna announced on Wednesday that Swiss midfielder Xabier Margairaz could be out of action for up to one year.

Margairaz, 24, tore ligaments and the cartilage in his right knee in Wednesday morning's friendly match against second division side Eibar.

The Osasuna doctors calculate that he will be out of action for anything between 10 and 12 months.

This means that Margairaz will not be able to play for co-hosts Switzerland in the Euro 2008 finals.

Maragairaz joined Osasuna from FC Zurich eight months ago, and has been first choice in 11 Liga games this season.

The Pamplona club, coached by former striker Jose Angel Ziganda, are 13th in La Liga following Sunday's 3-1 home win over Atletico Madrid.
