MADRID — Police in Spain and Romania arrested 83 people on Thursday in connection with a series of violent robberies and allegations of falsifying documents.
In a joint operation called Armageddon, the suspects – all Romanians – were arrested in raids across Spain. There were also two arrests in Romania.
Hundreds of police took part in the raids in Alicante, Barcelona, Cordoba, Granada, the Balearic Islands, Madrid, Malaga and Valencia.
The suspects are all linked to a series of robberies on luxury homes along the Spanish Mediterranean coast and falsifying documents to allow Romanians to enter Spain illegally.
There has been widespread public concern in recent months about robberies carried out by organised gangs of criminals from Eastern Europe.
