Madrid - Lawmakers in the Spanish parliament can now buy Coca-Cola from its vending machines safe in the knowledge the cans are made in Spain, thanks to the efforts of the house speaker.

When the speaker, Jose Bono, was informed that the cans were made in Poland he told the company supplying them to replace them with Spanish-made products, a spokesman for Bono said Friday, confirming a report in the newspaper El Mundo.

"This recommendation was only made so that those buying the drinks can read the nutritional information on the cans in Spanish," he said.

El Mundo said Bono told the head of the company, Arturo Fernandez, who had chosen to buy the cans from Poland in order to save money, that "it was not appropriate that there is no Spanish Coca-Cola" in the parliament.

It said the vending machines are now selling only Spanish-made Coke cans.
