MADRID -  Spain's King Juan Carlos on Wednesday praised tourism as a "driving force for the understanding between peoples" on inaugurating the International Tourism Fair (FITUR), one of the world's top tourism fairs, in Madrid.

Tourism was also an "efficient tool for eradicating poverty," the king said at the fair, which brought together more than 13,300 companies from 170 countries.

A record 250,000 people were expected to visit the fair, which was staged for the 18th time. The FITUR will run through 3 February.
