ARAPILES- A pensioner was killed and seven others sustained minor injuries when a fire broke out early Thursday at a retirement home in Arapiles, in Spain's Salamanca province.

The fire, which started on the ground floor of the three-story residence at approximately 1:00 a.m., may have been started by a cigarette.

Firefighters put out the blaze in an hour.

An employee noticed smoke coming from one of the individual bedrooms.

Residents were evacuated by Red Cross workers and several were treated for smoke inhalation.

Firefighting teams, helicopters and health care workers were deployed to the scene of the fire.

The evacuation was "very complicated", firefighters said, because of the residents' advanced age and as many had physical disabilities.
