The body of one man was found on board a boat carrying some 35 African migrants that was intercepted on Saturday just off the coast of southern Spain, local police said.

MADRID - Coastguards took the boat, which appeared to have been drifting for two days, to the Mediterranean port of Motril where several passengers were treated for hypothermia.

On Monday 25 African migrants, including 19 minors, died after their boat sank off Spain's Canary Islands.

Officials said the return of warm weather and calm seas was behind a rise in attempts by African migrants to reach Spanish soil by boat.

Illegal immigrants have traditionally attempted to reach the Spanish mainland by crossing the Strait of Gibraltar, but a crackdown there has led traffickers to increasingly use longer and more dangerous routes, including to the Canary Islands located in the Atlantic, west of Morocco.
