GRAN CANARIA — One man was found dead and two injured among a group of 25 illegal immigrants from Africa on board a boat which arrived in the Canary Islands.

The two injured men were immediately taken to hospital in Las Palmas but their medical  condition was not known.

One hundred illegal immigrants were arrested between Sunday night and Monday morning while they attempted to reach the Canary Islands, in the Atlantic Ocean off the Moroccan coast.

At least 81 people drowned last year as they attempted to reach the Canary Islands or cross the Straits of Gibraltar between Morocco and the Spanish mainland, the routes most frequently used by illegal immigrants from Africa seeking to come to Europe.

Last year, the Spanish authorities say they intercepted 740 boats and landing sites carrying a total of 15,675 would-be immigrants in these two areas.
