A 76-year-old woman died and her husband is missing Friday due to flooding caused by heavy rains in Spain, police said.

The body of the woman was found beside a river bank near her home in the town of Vegadeo in the northern region of Asturias, a police spokesman said.

Her 82-year-old husband has been reported missing and a search was underway to find him, the spokesman added.

"The alarm was sounded by the couple's son who found water in the house and his parents missing when he returned home after work," he said.

Several houses in Vegadeo were flooded after the Sauron river overflowed its banks.

Police rescued about 60 people in Asturias, most of them at a camping site, on Thursday because of flooding caused by the heavy rain.

The national weather office issued a "yellow" alert Friday for Asturias and the neighbouring region of Cantabria, the second level on a scale of four, which warns that weather conditions are "potentially dangerous".
