JAEN - The head of the regional Foreigners' Affairs office in Jaen has been arrested in connection with an alleged scam to get visas and work permits for illegal immigrants, police said Wednesday.

The official, named only as Jose B.S., was due to appear in court Wednesday along with a Moroccan citizen who lives in the same Andalusian city.

A police investigation started in the summer, but gathered pace in September.

Police sources said the investigation centred on allegations of producing false documents, bribery and offences "against the rights of foreigners and workers' rights".

The head of the regional government in Jaen, Fernando Calahorro, said the official had been suspended while the investigation was underway.

Calahorro admitted that for the past month there had been suspicions of "irregularities" in work permits and visas and an internal investigation had been underway.

According the local newspaper, the Diario Jaen, the official has admitted to police his part in a gang to get papers for illegal immigrants.
