SANTAIGO DE COMPOSTELA - Driving winds reaching up to 156kmh lashed much of northern Spain on Wednesday.
Electricty cables and trees were brought down in many parts of Galicia and emergency services reported scores of calls from worried residents.
The high winds and driving rain also hit parts of Asturias, Cantabria, the Basque Country.
Record wind speeds were recorded in Galicia in Santa Maria de Oia where it reached 156kmh.
Rainfalls reached 87mm in some parts of Galicia, like Santa Comba - which was the highest ever recorded.
Forecasters predicted the heavy rainfalls and high winds should die off through the day.
But they advised people to close windows and secure any loose household objects.
