GUADARRAMA-Nine workers were injured when two service trains collided inside a tunnel.
One worker was described as in a grave condition after the accident late on Monday.
The crash happened in the mountainous region of the Sierra de Guadarrama, between Madrid and Segovia to the north.
One train carrying workers hit the other stationary train which was in the tunnel.
Even though neither train was travelling at high speed, nine workers were hurt because of the shock of the crash.
They were taken to a hospital in Segovia.
Eight only suffered bruising and were later released after treatment.
However, a ninth worker suffered a broken back and has remained in hospital.
It is the second accident in the same tunnel involving service trains.
In August last year, one train caught FIRE near the mouth of one of the tunnels, leaving 34 workers trapped for five hours.
The latest accident happened as workers are nearing the final phase of building a high-speed AVE train link.
