MADRID - Nine people were slightly injured Friday when a television crane collapsed at a pavilion about an hour before the Spanish prime minister arrived to make a speech, local emergency services said.

The accident occurred in the southeastern city of Murcia, where thousands were gathering for a campaign rally by Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero for next month's European Parliament elections.

The nine injured suffered cuts and bruises and were taken to hospital for checks after receiving initial treatment by medical teams at the scene.

It was not clear what caused the crane, which held a television camera, to collapse.

Zapatero arrived at the rally about one hour after the accident, which took place around at 7:15pm.
