BARCELONA – Nine people have died within 10 days in Spain from continued high temperatures.
The latest victim was an elderly woman of 83 who was taken to Hospital Clinico in Barcelona suffering from heat stroke. Her body temperature had risen to above 40 degrees.
The previous victim was a 52-year-old man who was working in the sun on a building site in Menorca.
Eight men and one woman have died in 10 days this summer, aged between 32 and 83.
Last year, the same number died during the whole of the summer. In 2004, there were 26 deaths due to the heat.
On Wednesday, the authorities released storm alerts in Catalonia, Aragon, Navarra, La Rioja, the Basque Country, Castilla y Leon, Cantabria and the Balearic Isles.
