BARCELONA — The case of a five-year-old girl who is in a coma after allegedly being beaten by her step father took another turn when her mother was arrested.
The country has been gripped by the fate of Alba who is gravely ill after the alleged attack ten days ago.
Her step father was held in custody in connection with the case.
But the girl's mother was arrested and will be held in custody for reasons which have not been made public.
A judge has ordered no details of the case should be made public of the case, as is normal with child abuse prosecutions.
Last week, the mother had been granted conditional bail.
Her fiancé is accused of the attempted murder of Alba and is being held in custody.
Daily national television bulletins have detailed each development in the case and it has attracted widespread attention in the Press.
Alba was rushed to hospital on 4 March suffering from cranial trauma. She has been in a coma but was said to be stable.
Her mother said she never saw anything strange about her fiancé though she did add that her daughter appeared frightened when he was around.
It later emerged later that this was not the first time the girl had been hospitalised.
Last December, she was taken to hospital suffering from fractures and hematomas.
Doctors said then there were signs she had been physically abused.
However, no action was taken and she was returned to her family.
Since the latest incident, a judge has ordered an investigation to find out if earlier errors were made in her care.
